Immigrant youth, acculturation, adaptation, resilience,
developmental psychopathology
I study the acculturation and adaptation of immigrant youth. My specific focus is on the factors that place immigrant adolescents' adaptation with respect to the accomplishment of developmental tasks, and/or their mental health, at risk, and on protective factors and processes (individual, family, school and social) that promote positive adaptation. I conduct my work within a resilience framework, focusing on positive and negative outcomes of migration. Acculturation is examined in a developmental context, integrating social psychological concepts. Understanding societal and individual factors that foster adaptive functioning and prevent maladaptation of immigrant youth will allow us to capitalize on migration and help youth with migrant backgrounds integrate successfully into their new environments.
For this purpose I developed with professor Ann S. Masten and other colleagues the Athena Studies of Resilient Adaptation (AStRA), which is a collaborative project between the Department of Psychology of the University of Athens and the Institute of Child Development of the University of Minnesota. We are also collaborating with professor Jens B. Asendorpf, Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany in a number of publications stemming from this project.
